Become A Basic Wildland Firefighter (FFT-2).

The Firefighter Type 2 (FFT-2) serves on an engine crew under a Squad Boss and an Engine Boss, performing fire suppression and fuels management duties in the most adverse climate, fuel, and terrain conditions.

The student of FFT-2 training will acquire the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for entry level placement on a contract engine crew through the completion of a series of self-paced online courses, one classroom day, and a field day with pack test. Upon completion, the student will have earned a "Red Card" and all certifications necessary for hire on a wildland engine crew.

Following is a summary of the five online courses required:

IS700b - This course introduces and overviews the National Incident Management System (NIMS). NIMS provides a consistent nationwide template to enable all government, private-sector, and nongovernmental organizations to work together during domestic incidents.

ICS 100 - Introduction to the Incident Command System, introduces the Incident Command System (ICS) and provides the foundation for higher level ICS training. This course describes the history, features and principles, and organizational structure of the Incident Command System. It also explains the relationship between ICS and the National Incident Management System (NIMS).  

S-130 Firefighter Training - This course is hands on training providing entry level firefighting skills. Students will be taken to the field for a day of instruction which includes: safety orientation, firefighter preparedness, tools and equipment, firing devices, use of water, suppression, securing the control line, use of maps, hazardous materials, and operating safely.

L-180 Human Factors in the Wildland Fire Service - This online course exposes students to human performance concepts as part of basic wildland firefighter training. The course is designed for entry-level operational personnel, however, this course also applies to all wildland fire service personnel, including non-operational personnel.

S-190 Introduction to Wildland Fire Behavior - This course provides instruction in the primary environmental factors that affect the start and spread of wildfire, and recognition of potentially hazardous situations. Students will learn to identify the environmental factors of fuels, weather and topography and their effect on fire behavior, and the three sides of the fire triangle.

S-130 Register for an NWCG account. Choose Blended Course Option (2008 version). Choose Complete Online Component. Please note the browser requirements. A Field Day portion will be done in person with a certified trainer.
